In recent years, there has been an increased interest in shamanism by anthropologists who find that there are some universal characteristics of the shamanic experience, regardless of the culture or geography where such phenomena takes place. Four general characteristics of shamanism include the ability to go into altered states of consciousness, journeys made into alternate realities, contact made with spirit guides or denizens of those realms, and a motivation to help other people.
