The speaker begins with a brief but interesting biographical sketch of Kahlil Gibran (1883-1931), whose name means “comforter of souls.” Today, Gibran is best known for his popular work, The Prophet, a book of 26 poetic essays that was first published in 1923. Since then, the book has been translated into at least 40 languages and has never been out of print. The speaker considers The Prophet one of the great books of all time. Why? First, it contains timeless truths of existence. Second, it is imbued with spiritual energy. Third, in The Prophet, Gibran makes brilliant use of analogy (“Truth made visible”). Finally, it is a work on moral philosophy which is applicable to everyday situations. 2000. 50 minutes.
