In this talk, Dr. John Algeo explores Henry David Thoreau as a person, as a philosopher in the New England Transcendentalist School, and as the author of Walden, which Algeo claims is one of the most profound books ever written. Unfortunately, Thoreau was not well respected during his lifetime and it is only during the twentieth century that he gained fame for his writings, especially for his most notable work, Walden. Dr. Algeo treats Walden as a spiritual journey, during which he draws some interesting parallels between Thoreau’s ideas and the key tenets of Buddhism. Fans of Thoreau will certainly not be disappointed with this very informative and sometimes humorous portrayal of one of America’s most famous authors. 1997. 49 minutes.
