Among the curious lore of H. P. Blavatsky’s Secret Doctrine are her many references to a mysterious language called Senzar. And what is Senzar? The simple answer is that it remains a mystery. But Blavatsky claimed that there was a time in the dim, remote past when all of humanity shared a common language. Furthermore, she said that this primordial language is still known to a very few Initiates of our time. Blavatsky claimed that the Stanzas of Dzyan, upon which The Secret Doctrine is based, where originally written in that mysterious language called Senzar. In this lecture, John Algeo, analyzes the various clues given by Blavatsky as to the origins and nature of Senzar. Algeo is a former President and current member of the American Dialect Society, the American Name Society, and the Dictionary Society of North America, and former Director of the Commission on the English Language of the National Council of Teachers of English. 1986. 48 minutes
